Mr Harry Wells, of Woodstock, storekeeper, son of the late E. A. Wells, purposes standing for the vacancy in the \\ estland County Council caused by the death of his father. Mr Wells is well-known in the district of which he is a native, and is now the manager of the firm of Wells Bros.

In the course of an interview at Christchurch, the Hon. W. A. Veitch Minister of Alines states: —“I was waited on by a number of deputations asking for extension of the railway from Ross to South Westland, for improved hurbour facilities at Okarito, improvement of the tourist traffic organisation, roads, bridges, afforestation, and a number of other important questions of intense interest to the people of South Westland. As all these representations concerned departments not under my direct control, I could not discuss the problems very minutely with the deputations. I undertook to refer them to the Alinister directly concerned. I am very much impressed with the possibilities of South Westland, and I am sure the time is not far distant when the people of Canterbury will find that their trade with -South Westland will increase very rapidly. It is even now well worth catering for with the special attention of the business people.” Mr Veitch wa s able to spare a few hours from public matters to go or the ice at the Fox Glacier, where he had a- happy time, which was all too short. He was very much impressed with the enterprise shown by those whose business it is to provide accommodation for tourists at the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. It seemed up-to-date and of a most comfortable and attractive character. The tourist traffic had suffered a little this season owing to the roughness of the weather but, judging by appearances, there was every reason to hope that the rest of the summer would induce an increasing number of people to visit those beauty spots.
