A short time ago we published a press association message from New Plymouth reporting that a gathering of 600 school teachers there had wel-. coined 'the Minister for Education with combined singing, asking for increased pay. This caused a general feeling of resentment at such a degradation of an honourable profession, the extent of this feeling being somewhat surprising, objection being voiced in many unexpected quarters to such an unusual procedure. The message did not say how the Minister acted in their request, but the teachers’ journal "National Education,” reports the incident a.s follows: For Mr Atmore the students’ ditty ran to the song “How Do You Do, Mr Atmore, How Do You Do.” The motive was “This would be a happy day if you would increase our pay.” Mr Atmore said lie would have appreciated the song much more if it had not had that sordid little line at the end. We congratulate the Minister on his courage and directness in administering so neatly a well merited rebuke. In concluding his speech on that occasion, the Minister said the comparative salaries of secondnry and primary school teachers were for a school of 600 and more, £920 against £585. “That state of affairs,” he said, “would be altered at the earliest possible moment.” It is to be hoped that in the levelling process Mr Aimore will not level up from the bottom only.
