AUSTRALIA’S TARIFF

BITTER CRITICISM IN BRITAIN. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.] LONDON, Jan. 30. The Hosiery Trade’s Joint Industrial Council has passed a resolution expressing surprise and re-sen tine.a Hie vindictive treatment which Hie Australian Tariff accorded to British knitwear the duties ranging from 150 per cent, to six hundred per cent, which was tantamount to a prohibition against importation. The resolution therefore, the suggestion added, that valuable preferences should stitl.be offered is unwarranted. The Council added that- “British industries’ claims for consideration as an important customer for Australian raw materials and products had been ruthlessly ignored, and therefore it was only natural that their trade should, in its own interests, seek to obtain its requirements from sources where the value of reciprocity is more highly appreciated than in the commonwealth.”
