Miss Wylie, A.T.C.L., notifies she will resume teaching on February 3rd. at Hokitika and on February 4th. at Woodstock. Hon. W. A. Veitcli, Minister of Mines, is expected to anrive here this evening between 5 and G o’clock. Deputations will be taken at 7.30 o’clock To-morrow the Hon Minister proceeds south as far as Weheka. In connection with our report of the proceedings of the Magistrate’s Court, appearing in last Thursday’s issue, we have been asked to state that the defendant in a debt case A Woolhouse, is not Arthur Woolhouse of Kokatahi. The Westland County Council calls for tenders in this issue for two small sections of road construction work,- being part of the Kumara Junction to Kapitea road. One section is on the northern bank of the Kapitea Creek and other section is on the southern bank. The road, when completed, will give vehicle access for the Kapitea residents to the Chesterfield railway station. Tenders close next Tuesday week.
The distribution of the reward of SE2SO in connection with the detention of the Gray brothers at Christchurch will not be decided upon until after the Supreme Court proceedings have concluded at Christchurch, said Mr W. B. M’Hveney, Commissioner of Police when interviewed at New Plymouth on Wednesday. “You must understand that Constable Gillum merely arrested the men,” said the Commissioner. “He did great work, but then he did not know the men were connected with tne incendiary fires. The whole matter will bo looked into- when the prosecution is concluded. “It will resolve into a matter of who- secured the strongest evidence or the most probable. Detectives will share in he disributio-n. Constable Gillum will certainly get some but not all of the reward.

Miss M. Davies teacher of pianoforte notifies she will resume teaching on Monday next, February 3rd at her residence, Hampden Street.
Amongst the guests at the Christchurch Hotary Club lunch on Wednesday was a Canadian Rptarian J. C. Fowlds, who is a member of the visiting bowling team. He said that New Zealand was a wonderful country and had a wonderful climate all the year round. Life in Canada, for the farmers especially, wa.s much harder than in New Zealand. Canada was developing her mineral resources and was progressing satisfactorily.
Ihe death oceured at Wellington on Monday of a very old resident of the West Coast in the person of Mr Thomas Cochrane, at the age of 74 years. He leaves a sorrowing wife and a grown up family of four sons and two daughters: Mrs .J. Sherlock, Utopia, lload Westport; Mrs V. Kirkbeck, Newtown, Wellington; William, Te Kuiti : Dave, Creymouth ; Allan, Granity; Joe, Nelson. There are also 14 grandchildren. Mr Cochrane had the distinction of bringing the first motorear to Westport, a ear with a chain drive. It was imported from England ifor show at the Christchurch Exhibition.
The Westport “Star” of Tuesday states When the Public Works .Department, were carrying out blasting operations near Tiroroa, in the Euller Gorge, a quantity of rock and debris brought down landed on a bridge putting it out of commission. The mishap occurred after the early cars had gone through, but passengers by the second service had to b<? transferred to the ears on the other side. The debris also carried away the telegraph lines with the result that no telegrams were received in Westpert until close on 12 o’clock, A gang of men was immediately put on repairing the damage.
The special attraction to-night will lie the Swimming Club’s carnival at the Municipal Baths. It is expected that to-night’s gathering will eclipse anything ,yet held by the Club. Representatives from 'Wellington, Christchurch. and Dunedin will be competing. Besides the Lyall Bay team of fifteen strong the following will be taking part in (to-night’s events: — Messrs R. Calder, Dunedin, champion diver of N.Z.), W. Keesing (runner,up in the diving championship), A. Stokes, Christchurch, (runner-up to G. Bridson for N.Z. .swimming championship), J. Thompson, Christchurch, H. Walker, Dunedin, and swimmers from all parts of the Coast. There is sure to be large attendance present for such a notable event. The dance to be held in the Soldiers’ Hall will also be a special attraction, the music for which will be supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra, so beware for a big night to-night.
