C. EASTWOOD FALLS, illy Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. ‘29. A racecourse accident of a very unusual nature* which resulted in the jockey,. C, Eastwood, sustaining grave injuries to the head, occurred before the running of the Calliope Handicap, a race for two years olds, at Takapuna to-day. The preliminaries were in progress and Sub Editor, ridden bv H. Gray, and Top Star, ridden by Eastwood, were running down the straight together, when Sud Editor suddenly swerved across in front of Top Star, who stumbled. Although he did not come down, Eastwood was unbalanced, and he was thrown heavily. The injured horseman was removed to the hospital, where he wa R found to bo suffering from grave injuries to the head. His condition late to-night was reported to be fail ,y serious. Eastwood is a married man, aged 28 years, and resides at Riccarton, Christchurch.
