TRAIN DISASTER
DRIVER AND FIREMAN CRUSHED TO DEATH. RESCUED YOUTH LOSES HAND. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. Leaping the rails at Warrimoo v Mountains, an engine of a passenger train from Mount Victoria to Sydney plunged over an embankment and crushed the driver, Harold Hannah, and fireman, Edward Smith, to death. Working desperately amid the escaping steam under the wrecked engine, doctors succeeded in freeing a youth who was also imprisoned, by amputating his hand. The horror of the wreck was intensified by darkness and heavy rain. The express was crowded. Breakdown gangs were rushed to the scene and struggled to extricate the trapped victims, but ‘ the fierce flame of oxya cetyl ene failed to cut through the thick steel walls. Only one passenger was hurt. The others suffered from shock.
