O'n Wednesday the Methodist' Sunday School picnic from Greymouth will be held on Cass Square, which has become quite, a popular resort now for Coast picnics!. Tenders closed on Saturday for clearing Cedar Creek track, near ltoss. The tender of Jack Jones. £22 8s was accepted on behalf of the County Council. The other tenders received were H. Phillips £23, T. J. Mulvaney £35. Travellers on the main south road are much struck by the. profusion of the rata bloom at present. Pound Lake Wahapo and on the Okarito road, as we l as several other spots, the bloom is a wonderful sight. It is a special attraction of the southern trip at present. It is an added glory to the wonderful bush scenory along the southern route. Addisons are making special reductions on all Millinery and Frocks.— 4-dvt,

The Herepo Tennis Club are holding their annual ball in the Harihari Hall on Friday next, Jan. 31st. Music by biie Southern Cross Jazz Band.

It is understood the bye-election t.o fill the vacancy on .the Westland Council caused by the demise- of Mr E. A. Wells, will be fixed for 26th February, with nominations falling duo on the 14th February. Similar dates will apply also to the vacancy in the Wqstland Electric Power -Board.

You are reminded of t-he swimming carnival on Thursday night. An attractive programme of events liais been arranged, and included in the competitors will be some of the swimmers from the New Zealand Championships at present being held in Greymouth. A dance will follow the carnival, the music for which will be supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra.

The Greymouth Watersiders picnic on Saturday on Cass Square passed off very successfully. There were about 500 visitors. The picnic was accompanied by the Greymouth Municipal Band which rendered a good programme of music during the day. The visitors found considerable enjoyment in the side shows now on Cass Square, consisting of a round-a-bout, ferris wheel, and chair-o’-plane, all splendidly equipped.

Mr M. M’Leod, who has been senior inspector in the Canterbury Education District since August 6, 1925, will retire in March. He was in Hawke’s Bay when he succeeded Mr W. Btock in his present position. Mr M’Leod will be succeeded by Mr A. M’Neil, who at present is senior inspector in Southland, having taken that position last year. Before going to Southland lie was -a. popular and successful teacher and inspector in Canterbury.

The death occurred yesterday at the Grey Hospital of Mr William It. Close, at the age of 53 years. The deceased who was a native of Kumara, was formerly on the staff of the Hokitika Mental Hospital, but had for some time been in failing health, and latterly had been a patient at the Grey Hospital. A man of quiet disposition, he was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He leaves a brother, Mr John Close, of Guiness street Greymouth.
