/ The second cricket test match between New Zealand and M.C.C. commenced to-day on the Basin Reserve in ideal weather. New Zealand won the toss and held the wickets all the afternoon, having lost only three wickets for 1539 when stumps were drawn. The first wicket fell; at 276. Both Dojm'sL'i: and Mills with the greatest confidence, scoring all round the wicket, the many changes of howling in nowise stopping their progress. The crowd numbered about 5000.

The scoring of Mills and Dempster was of an even rate. Dempster reaching his century in 203 minutes, and Mills his in 219 minutes. Mills had a life shortly after, Gilligan losing a chance of running him out by misfielding and Mills spooned the next one to Gilligan’ who, with the sun in his eyes, missed it.
