MELBOURNE, Jan. 21

The compulsory coal conference, presided over by Judge Booby, in the Arbitration Court, lias failed. Air AlacDonald, chairman of the Northern Colliery Prnpietors, definitely refused the Prime Alinister, Air Smillin’s proposals for a settlement. This conference was summoned followed an application by the Aliners’ Federation alter the new leg had been served on the employers, and when it failed, Justice Bee by ordered

the matter to be brought before the Court.

. REMOVAL OF POLICE ASKED. FROM THE COALFIELDS. ' SYDNEY, Jan. 21. A deputation of Labour Parliamentarians, local Aldermen and Parsons from the coalfields to-day asked the Chief Secretary of New South Wales, Hon Mr Chaffev to withdraw the police from the coalfields. The deputation declared that the miners’ families are mostly law abiding. They resented the presence of so many police. ;, The deputation A guaranteed that there would be no ? lawlessness. They also asked for the impartial inquiry into tli e police methods and into the disturbances. Mr Chaffey, replying declined all the requests. He took it as an opportunity of defending the police, whose' lives... fund reputations, he , said, had been threatened and maligned simply because they had faithfully discharged their duty to the public.

Premier Bavin last night made an eloquent appeal to the Aliners Federation to. realise the economic facts and join the Government in an effort to bury the past, and place, the industry on a sounder footing. A workers defence army, about two hundred and fifty strong, paraded at Trades Hall last night. They lined up in military fashion and members gave the Russian Red Army salute when dismissed.
