SHANGHAI, January 17
Thu Szechwan Province, with a population of approximately seventy millions, in North China, is virtually isolated in regard to river communication, in consequence of a terrific ice jam reported in the Yangtze gorges beyond leliang. Alyl river shipping customarily travelling through the gorges is at a standstill. The ice packs are the result of a week’s intense wintry conditions forming a solid wall holding up many vessels and thousands of tons oif cargo, causing concern ‘a shipping firms and merchants. Dynamite is believed necessary to re-open the gorges. Several British gunboats are temporarily held prisoner behind the icepacks. Thousands of inland junks I and ferries throughout North China are similarly idle. Half the country’s canals are frozen. It is the severest winter for many years.
