SUN SPOTS

WELLINGTON, January 16

After a period cl' cloudy weather the ,sun lias been examined at Kelburn Observatory during the last two days. There an- two large centres «f activity which have crossed the central meridian of the sun, but their effect on wireless reception was very noticable today at the Dominion Observatory when time signals from Honolulu and Xauen in Germany, could be heard only with great difficulty, due to static. Thirty-four spots were observed on the sun yesterday, tlm largest spot having a penumbral diameter of approximately 29,000 miles and showing great internal activity.

WHARF TRAGEDY

WELLINGTON, Jan. 17

John Harold Tallow, a waterside worker, aged 43 years, fell down the bold yesterday afternoon on the' overseas teamer Turakina, berthed here, and received severe injuries to his back, from which lie died in the hospital early this morning. Deceased lived at Lower Hutt. \

BOY BATHER DROWNED

HAMILTON, Jan. 17

A lialf-casto boy, Rangi Gannon, aged 14, residing with his uncle at Pollock Settlement, Auckland, was drowned in Hamilton Lake this afternoon. Deceased jumped off a diving platform out of liis depth. Several children nearby noticed him jump in but they did not raise any alarm until the deceased had been under tinwater for several minutes. William Lane, who was asleep in a car in the Domain ground, was attracted by the cries of the cbildcn, and hurried tithe snot. He jumped in and pulled the hoy out on to the bank. Gannon could not swim. Resuscitation methods were tried unsuccessfully for over two hours.
