The , result means England retains the Ashes. LONDON, Jan. 15. Twenty thousand witnessed the match which was played at Archdale. In the first few minutes Australia had two kicks at the goal and England had three, all of which failed. Smith got over for England but the referee ruled the final pass forward. The Australians at this stage were defending sternly. Later when in England’s twenty-five they were penalised for' scrum infringements. Eneland on the whole had the upper hand in the first half which produced a terrific struggle. The home team’s backs, however, missed three good chances provided by the forwards who were getting the ball regularly. Australians, without the semblance of a chance defended gallantly. Fifield (Australia) was carried off in the second, half. Following a scrum under the southerners posts, Smith threw himself over in the corner for a' try. Sullivan missed the goal.
