AUCKLAND. Jan. 11

R. W. Ga.)laugher’s grocery store in Victoria Street was burglariously entered last might using a jemmy on two doors. The use of explosives on the safe caused the lock to jamb. The intruders evidently departed hurriedly without taking anvthing.

KOMATA’S rough trip

WELLINGTON, January 11. I'ie* Union Steam Ship Company’s steamer Komata, which was due at Wellington on Thursday afternoon I rom Westport, did not arrive in port until last evening having been sheltering under D’Urville Island.

Captain Wby born reported that when the Komata. rounded Farewell Spit at 2.20 a.m. on Thursday, she ran into a heavy south easterly gale " ith mountainous seas. The ship was considerably buffeted until she sheltered at D’Urville Island much to the relief of her forty passengers.' The vessel shipped some heavy water during Thursday morning, but suffered no substantial damage.

LAUNCH WRECKED. AUCLAND, Jan. 12. The Auckland launch Ozone has been wrecked on Tawharanui Point, Takatu Peninsula, just north of Kawau. Only two men were on board. The crew consisted of Fred Woolley, of Pcn-onby, and B. L. Sweeney. They were away on a cruise. The launch lelt I.eignt on Friday morning, with a brisk easterly blowing off Tafiatu Point. Trouble occurred with the engine, and they dropped anchor, but the line broke in heavy seas, and the launch drifted on to the rocks. The two men scrambled ashore in the breakers. The men were picked nip by a Government launch. She was a thirty foot boat, valued at £2OO. There was no insurance. The yachtsmen lost all their gear, including a wireless set.

MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED

DUNEDIN, January 25.

Robert Dodds, a single man, 25 years of age, residing at Alosgiel, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening, suffering from injuries to his spine, received through falling off a motor cycle. He died later in the evening.

AIOTOR FATALITY

OAMARU, Jan. 12.

When a delivery car overturned at Ekterslio on Saturday afternoon through the bursting of a tyre, Irvine Gray Bremmer, aged 22, whose parents reside at Oannvru, received internal injuries to, which, he succumbed this afternoon. William Grey, the driver of the, ear, suffered shock. A lady passenger escaped uninjured.

MOTORING ACCIDENT,

BLENHEIM, Jan. 13

A party of Christchurch motorists were cn route to Nelson from Blenheim yesterday when the car skidded on the bridge at Okarimio carrying away a fence and overturned down a steep bank. Of the four occupants K, H. North sustained extensive cuts on the throat and Aliss Al. GiLlmour a broken jaw. Both are in the Wairau Hospital. A dog with the party was killed. The car was not greatly damaged.

A BURGLARY

NAPIER, Jan. 13

Burglars entered thq premises of Flayer Bros., general merchants, in the early hours of Sunday morning and removed a heavy safe containing about £ls, in a car. Clues point to the work being that of three youths. A nearby resident watched the. thieves at work but did not inform the police. till the miscreants decamped. Entry was gained by forcing the door.

BENZINE STORE BURGLED

CARTERTON, Jan. 13

Feist and Company’s benzine store was burglariously entered at midnight on Saturday. Three cases of benzine and one of kerosene were stolen. A car was left parked round the corner. The padlock was burst off the door. The cases were carried to the car and the case containing kerosene was discarded on the roadside. The benzine store is opposite the police residue, but the constable was away on annual leave. ’I he residence was empty.

CAPTAIN COOK’S TILLER. GREY MOUTH, Jan. 13

The tiller of the barge of Captain Cook’s Resolution was handed by Captain Alacl.ean Campbell to Air R J. McLean during the latter’s recent tour of Britain for presentation to the New Zealand Government. Air AlcLean handed it to the High Comw'iskw*niws’ Office to iorward bo the Dominion. The teller is about seven i ii Idiyth of oik, Jacobean designed. An American offer to purchase was declined.

HORSE BURNT. HASTINGS, Jan. 13

This morning a five roomed bouse on Whitehead Road, owned by Airs A. AY. Kunnner. and occupied by herself, her husband and a young daughter, was destroyed by lire. 'Hie occupants escaped in, their night attire. Practically nothing was saved. Insurances on building £ioo, and tuinitore £3OO, both in Standard Office.
