SIR JOSEPH WARD REPLIES

WELLINGTON, Jan. 13

The Prime Minister has issued a. reply to Mr Davy’s statement, lie remarked that he was not surprised at the* sudden development of a critical attitude <ui Air Davy’s part towards the United Cabinet, because Air Davy had Ije.ome aware that considerable dissatisfaction had arisen in regard to his actions, and that this situation had led to a* serious consideration of Air Davy’s official salaried position. Air Davy must have been well aware, said Sir Joseph, when publishing his statement, that the final decision on this personal matter would in all probability have been reached in the near future.

After defending the policy and achievements of the 'Government, Sir Joseph said there had always been the fullest confidence and consultation between members of the Cabinet and members of the Party, “and this question of consultation,” added Sir Joseph, “raised- an interesting point in regard to Mr Davy’s attitude towards the Cabinet. He appeared to arrogate to himself the right of imposing his desires upon Ministers, who very properly would not permit such an assumption, realising as all my colleagues do, that we, as Ministers of the Crown, are responsible not to any individual but to Parliament and the people of New Zealand, in the impartial discharge' of our important duties. I have no further comment to make,” concluded Sir Joseph.
