BRITAIN’S WORKLESS

INCREASE SINCE XMAS. (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, Jan. 7. Following the Christmas season, a large increase in unemployment is notified by the Ministry of Labour. On Dec. 30th. the total number of .unemployed was 1,510,200. This was 200,643 more than on December 16th. A similar increase was shown last year when the total on December 31st. was 249,578 more than that for December 17tli.

It is pointed out that, owing to the dismissal of the workers engaged for tiie Christinas trade and to extended short-time working, there is normally a large increase in unemployment immediately after Christmas. The toLil unemployed at the end of 1929 was 10.530 less than that at the end ot 1928.
