RELIEF WORKS.
MINISTER. INVESTIGATING. POSITION. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 7. Many of the big relief jobs which were put in hand by the Cabinet Unemployment Committee will shortly be coming to an end, and the Government is seeking fresh avenues of useful employment. The Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister for Public Works, stated in an interview this morning that he hoped to be in a position to make recommendations regarding work in the North Auckland district at the conclusion of his tour, which commenced to-day.
“There have been numerous unemployment relief jobs in the North Auckland district,” said the Minister,
‘‘.and I want to see what has been done. I feel sure that aifter an inspection of the reading system of the north I shall be in a better position to deal with the problem. At the present moment there are no big, relief jobs in prospect, but the Government does not intend to call a halt. Work will be authorised in the Auckland district as circumstances warrant.” The Minister said the investigation concerning the proposed Paeroa-Poke-no railway loop had not been started. During the last session of Parliament the House of Representatives voted £SOOO for an investigation concerning the nature of the country to be traversed.. This investigation is necesssarv by reason of the fact that some of the country over which the railroad would have to pass is not much better than a quaking bog. Mr Ransom said an announcement regarding the investigation would probably be made a little later in the year.
