News from Johannesburg states the Chief Magistrate committed the reporter Louw to prison for eight days, the sentence being suspended for a week to aJlow of an appeal to be lodged or time for Louw to reconsider his position.
The latter stated he considered sweeps were no more immoral than bets on horse racing, consequently he did not hesitate to give a pledge of secrecy, h was vital for the purpose of journalists’ work that they should strictly observe confidences. It was also a matter of personal honour.
