CANTERBURY V. AUCKLAND. BIG SCORING. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. The Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Auckland , concluded to-day at Eden Park, Auckland winning on the first innings by 9] runs, with seven wickets in hand. A great, partnership between Anthony and Gillespie for 214 runs was followed by another between Gillespie and Weir for 175. This placed the result beyond doubt. Gillespie, Anthony and Weir allplayod fine cricket, and each passed the century mark, the first named being only 17 runs short oi the second century before being dismissed.
Auckland declared their innings closed with five wickets down for 485, and at the conclusion of play Canterbury in the second innings had lost two w.icketts for 152. Kerr plpyed another fine innings for 69, before sac-ri-ming his wicket in attempting a hit, and Comb made a forceful 45, including the only six of the match. Roberts was unbeaten after a careful 24. The conditions were ideal, the wicket being in perfect order, and the bowlers had an unenviable task. Merritt was Canterbury’s stock howler, sending down 48 overs for 143 runs and 3 wickets. N.S.W. BEAT QUEENSLAND. SYDNEY, Jan. 7. In the Sheffield Shield match v. New South Wales, Queensland in the second innings made 84. Brew was top score with 26. In the bowling Everett took 6 for 23, and Chilvers 2 for 22. New South Wales won by 685 runs. Bradman's huge score is still a topic of conversation. He received a sheaf of complimentary telegrams including one from Ponsford, who hitherto held tlie world’s runs record. Bradman hit 42 fours during his memorable innings.
BRADMAN’S FEAT PRAISED. LONDON, Jan. 6. The newspapers applaud Bradman’s feat. The “Evening News” says that every English cricketer will gladly congratulate this talented youngster. It adds that a recovery in Australia batting dates from Bradman’s triumph in' the third test at Melbourne last year. His batting largely inspired Australians in a belief they will recover the ashes. y “The Daily Mail” says: Bradman is the boy wonder of cricket. His latest gigantic innings, following his previous scores, shows the consistency of his genius. English crowds are yearning to see him in action.
