Mr W. T. Morpeth, Commissioner of Crown Lands, loft to-day for Wellington on official business.

The Reefton races are taking place to-day and to-morrow. The train service to-moronv" permits of patrons journeying from Hokitika in the. morning, and returning in the evening.

The “Referee” referring to the late meeting of the Westland Racing Club states it was admirably conducted, and the starting of Air Geo. Reed tended towards the enjoyment of the racing. The Club has made many improvements in the last year, and the success of the fixture came at an opportune period.

Anglers at Lake Kanieri are meeting with considerable success, some nice catches being made. On Sunday last several nice catches were landed and included brown trout, rainbow trout, quinnat trout and a perch. Recently a mountain trout was hooked and landed. The majority -of the fish caught are quinnat. Most of the fishing is done by trolling.

One day last week a purse was left on the top of the telephone in the public box on the Dunedin Railway Station. The owner did not discover her loss until an hour afterwards, but when she returned it was gone, and neither notification to the railway authorities and the police nor advertising have so far been successful in disclosing the finder. The purse contained £22, representing all the money she possessed.

Yesterday Professor Easterfield visited Flowery Creek hill where lie made a soil examination of the paknlii, and later visited Aralmrn Valley and the Big Paddock. The Professor is of the opinion that treatment won hi greatly improve much of the land he saw yesterday. In the Buffer district excellent results are being obtained now from the treatment of poor lands where a good sole of grass is being established to the satisfaction of the farmers.

The death is announced from Palmerston North of Mr Joseph Whittam, formerly a well-known guard on the Westland railways. His wife (Miss Nellie Sargison) formerly of Hokitika, predeceased him several years ago.

A story is going the rounds in Napier at present concerning a milk vendor who in the course of his deliveries on a recent morning lost a £lO note, which he had been carrying in his pocket tied up with string. He discovered i his loss shortly after it must have occurred, says an exchange, alid searched carefully over the route which he had followed, hut without success. Later in the morning a Napier business man was on his way to work when he discovered that he was being followed by his fox terrier. He ordered the dog home, and after some

hesitation the dog obeyed. When it arrived home it was carrying in its mouth the £lO note which the m :i vendor had lost earlier in the morning. The owner got it back. "f :
