THEFT OF BEER. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) DUNIEDIN, Jan. 6. At the Police Court, Emmett James Hussey, William Garfoth and William John Newman were charged with stealing an oak keg and eighteen gallons of beer the property of the Canterbury (Steamship Company. The beer was consigned from. New Zealand Breweries for shipment and was stolen from the wharf. Newman was sentenced to three months gaol, Garfoth to one month, and Hussey to six weeks. Pinned in a motor car when it swerved from the road near Penrose last evening and was partially capsized in oft. of water, C. M. Cox, his wife and son, had a narrow escape from being drowned. Cox scrambled clear and dragged out his wife who was semiconscious from striking her head, and extricated with difficulty, his son, who was pinned beneath the seat. Artificia respiration had to be used to restore the son to consciousness. NELSON RAINFALL. NELSON, Jan. 2. In only five previous years since 1883 has the rainfall of 48.61 in. for 1929 been exceeded. These were: 1892 55.40 in..; in 1893, 50.12 in.; in 1894, 49.69 in.; and in 1924, 53.99 in. For the month of December the record was 3.99 in., as compared with 8.67 in. for the corresponding period of 1928, when the total fall was 41.21 in. A FIRE. . TAUMARUNUI, Jan. 6. A fire broke out in Manuautu Street at 3.15 this morning in a building owned by A, G. Riches, and occupied by Everybody’s Motors, and J. Pattison (saddler). The structure was practically gutted. Practically all the stock carried by both firms was destroyed. The alarm was given by three engineers working at King’s picture theatre which adjoins the damaged building. The Brigade did good work in saving the Theatre which was several times on fire. Only one wall v:as slightly burnt. Films worth fifteen hundred sterling stored in the theatre were removed. Another outbreak occurred at 6.45, but was quickly extinguished, Insuances on the building are £3OO on the South British. Pattison’s slock, £4OO. The amount on Everybody's stock is not available.
