BOAT TRAGEDY

MAN DROWNED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, January 6. Henry Burnitt aged 00, painter and paperhanger and son Thomas aged 20 were swamped in a small sailing boat, while attempting to cross the harbour from Devonport to Tantaki on Sunday morning. They clung to the boat which drifted nearly three hours before it grounded on Rangitoto. Henry Burnitt’s strength gave out and after a time he was supported by his son until the small craft went on the rocks when he was dead. His son was pounded on the rocks and extensively lacerated before he reached safety and eventually crawled ashore dragging the body of his father out of the water. He had to travel two miles to a prison camp, and later the police recovered the dead body.

Mrs Henry Burnett resides at Devonport.
