THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES

BETTER ON BEFORE

We sometimes seem so close to the details of life that we seldom have time to stand back and try to discern the great design. Some years ago in the north of England three workmen were chipping great stones. An inquisitive old man asked one of them what lie was doing and was told, in a surly voice, that he was earning twelve shillings a day. The second man replied that he was shipping a stone, as anyone could see, hut the third man said “Mister, I’m building a cathedral.” ' He had vision. In the same way each and every one, faithfully discharging the ordinary duties, is doing that and something more, for all duties thus discharged, tend to build up a nation. We do not know what lies ahead of us as a people, but we do know that, with courage and enterprise, we shall greet the unknown with a cheer and reach the next milestone with honour.
