INVERCARGILL, Jan. 4. The M.C.C. team commenced a match against Southland to-day, and batting first, had scored 284 for nine wickets when stumps were drawn, steady rain fell early in the morning, and although the weather cleared and the sun shone later, it was decided to postpone the commencement of the game till two o’clock. During the afternoon several light showers fell, causing play to bo suspended for brief intervals. The wicket was in good order, and the outlield was on the heavy side. M.C.C.—lst Innings. In the bowling McCabe took 5 for 3d, Fairfax 3 for 53, and Chi vers 2 for 52. New South Wales in the second innings made -368 for .3 iwicjkets. Bradman made 205 (not out), Kippax 115, and Fairfax 10. Stumps were then drawn. McCabe’s bowling against Queensland was the subject of admiration, and much favourable comment. Bradman, who has now scored over one thousand runs for the season in first-class, cricket, received an ovation yesterday. He is regarded as the outstanding batsman in Australia. VICTORIA DEFEATING SOUTH AUSTRALIA. .MELBOURNE, Jan. 5.
In the Sheffield Shield cricket match Victoria against South Australia, the latter in the second innings made 297. Hone scored 106. In the bowling A’Beckett took 5 for 63, and Ironmonger 4 for 88. Victoria in their second innings made 200 for two wickets. Ponsford made 107 (not out) and Heudiy 36. Stumps were then drawn. Victoria requires eleven runs to score an outright victory.
ASHBURTON AND WEST COAST. A DRAWN GAME. i A two days match was commenced on the Ashburton Domain oval last Thursday and concluded on Friday, between the Ashburton eleven and the West Coast senior team. The weather, on both days, was bautifully fine, and the wicket played exceeding y well throughout the match. Ashburton made 300 for 6 (declared), Nicliol 146, Lane 76 and 87, Nichol 30. Coast made 236 (Barlow 73, Nightingale 37, Knapp 29, Spender and Gillin 22) and 43 for 4. The match was drawn.
