A SHARP CONTRAST

LOADING FACILITIES. (Australian Press Association) ■ L (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) ' MELBOURNE, Jan. 4. Capt. Vander Loan, master of the Hoi land-Australia steamer Aldebaran, which has ariyed from Rotterdam, discussed the very modern methods in operation at Rotterdam for loading and unloading ships. He said that for moving coal they had huge iron grips electrically driven, capable of lifting fifteen tons at each grip. Eleven thousand tons of coal were discharged from his ship in 24 hours before corning to Australia. An-another occasion eleven thousand tons of bulk wheat was discharged in 24 hours. The grain was discharged by floating elevators which sucked it out of the holds into lighters. His ship this trip brought four thousand five hundred tons of British coal to Adelaide. There, the unloading pro--eess provided a sharp contrast to that y in use in the Continental' ports, the A work occupying six days in Australia.'
