Tin-; local Racing Club enjoyed an occasion of e.ttra good luck tins year in reverting to one day s meeting only for the summer season, deferring the remaining two days’ racing to the autumn season in Easter week. The weather on Boxing Day was all that could he passed off exceptionally well, . The course and appointments were at their bust. The late improvements were much appreciated by both owners and public. The new starting post for six furlong events proved a happy solution of the previous difficulty in starting these events on the turn. There is now a roomy “straight” start without the necessity of fighting for positions when t.rn harrier goes up. Quite an excellent improvement is the cutting down of the hill which blocked a view of the racing through the cutting at the back of the course. There is now a clear vision of the racing throughout, and the improvement in this respect was fully appreciated by spectators. A word of praise should he passed on the officials who were all at their posts, and. the whole meeting went with smoothness. Thg financial result of the gathering to the Club should be satisfactory. ’There was a general increase in the revenue, and the surplus will no doubt be acceptable as assisting to reduce somewhat the funded debt of the Club, The Club has had not a few reverses, hut its good fortune in missing the had weather yesterday after enjoying ao successful a one day’s meeting, may. lie set down as a special credit on the. opposite side. The Club lias done remarkably well to emerge so satisfactorily rrom the course of illluck which attended it of late years, the disastrous fire being a specially severe blow. It speaks well for the ciithusaism of those responsible for the management of the Club that the position was faced so well and handled so bob. i.v. 'Pho revised appointments have proved generally equal to requirements, and the steady improvements carried out have been all for the betterment of the uicing, and the public have enjoyed the sport under excellent conditions. 'Pho Westland Racing Club is a local institution which has been of considerable service to the town in the mailer of its general prosporitv and standing, and it bids lair to continue that useful service in the future, and with a continuance of good luck should lie able to do more in the future.
