WESTLAND RACING CLUB

MIDSUMMER MEETING. A. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The midsummer meeting of . the Westland Racing Club limited this year to one day, took place yesterday under perfect weather conditions and proved very successful. There was a large attendance, the course and appointments were in perfect order and the 'racing was very . interesting thoughout, with good fields. In the opening race it was found necessary to divide the field into two divisions and the winner of the second one paid a very substantial dividend. The various officials of the Club were at their posts and everything went without the slightest hitch. The sum of £10,026 was handled 'by Mr H. Lynch and his staff, as against £7.272 for the first day last year. The Municipal Band was present and played an enjoyable programme during the afternoon. The new starting place for the-six- furlongs faces proved very satisfactory to all concerned. ■After the race .for the Westland Cup Handicap the President of the Club (Air W. E. Williams) congratulated the owner-trainer, Mr E. Cuthbei’tson, on his' wip, and trusted the present would not (be the last occasion oh which he would compete for the race. He also thanked the Licensed Victuallers for the very lino silver cup they had donated. Air Williams then called on Hon. H. L. Michel to present the Cup. Hon. H. L. Michel said he desired to thank the Committee and Chairman of the Club for giving him the honour of presenting the Cup. He congratulated the owner and also the rider on their success and trusted they would come back again to future meetings, the journey being now so much easier than it had been in earlier years. Pie then presented the handsome Cup to Air Cuthberston, who briefly acknowledged the presentation and references of the speakers Cheers for the owner and jockey concluded the ceremony.

Courtlike got the worst of the start, ■Arrowmir and Sagittarius making the running. Courtlike came fast in the straight but Arrowmir held its lead and won by three lengths, third two lengths away. Sea Raid led from Ardfinnan and Royal Game with Wayward next, as they passed the stand the first- time round. There was little change till the straight was reached when Wayward came with a fine run and had the race won at the distance finishing a length in front of Sea Raid, witli Royal Game, a hot favourite, third, half a length away. Solgele and Deluge led the. field which bunched in the straight, in a fine finish Solgele winning by a length with Wailiomo a neck ahead of Arch Arrow. Time 1.11. HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP. Of £l2O, second £24, and third £l2 out of stakes. 7 furlongs (7) Rina AJunga (8.0) ... 1 (6) Zeuxis (8.10) 2 (3) Wrigjey (7.9) 3 Also started. —Oriflamb (9.0), Moratorium (8.T1), Audience (8.5), Bank Draft (8.5), Grattan (8.3), Shut Eye (8.10). Bank Ddrift, Rina Munga and Shut Eye took the lead, 'but at the entrance Rina Munga came away and won by a length with Wrigley who finished fast a neck away third. Time 1.32. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Of £IOO, second £2O, and third £lO out of stakes. 6 furlongs. (2) Nasstori (8.0) 1 (1) Solgele (8.12) 2 (3) Huntley (7.5) 3 Also started.—Spode (8.1), The Dove (7.13), .Sapient (7.7), Painting (7.5) From a good start Nasstori went to the front and was never headed winning by a length, third three lengths away. Time 1.16 1-5. GOLDFIELDS HANDICAP. Of £l2O, second £24, and third £l2 out of stakes. 7 furlongs. (1) Decoy Bird (8.7) ... 1 (4) 'Bank Draft (7.5) ... 2 (2) Some Lad (7.6) 3 Also started. —(Smithereens (8.7), Gold Mint (7.12), Corinthic (7.7).
