OBITUARY.

DR. IRWIN HUNTER. T) ['NED IX, December 22. The dentil occurred on Saturday night of Dr. Tnvin Hunter, of Dunedin after a protracted illness. Dr Hunter was the eldest son of the late .Mr William Hunter, for many years manager of the Bank df .New Zealand at Port Chalmers. The deceased was born in London in 1869 and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1880. He was a pupil of the Taranaki High School and later of the Otago Boys’ High School and a student of Otago University. He graduated in 1892 as .M,.A.. 8.5. C., with f irst class honours in Chemistry and later studied medicine and surgery at the London Hospital, gaining the diplomas of M.R.C.S., and L.R.C.P.. in 1879 and F.R.C.S. in 1898. He held several appointments in London hospitals. He was Resident Medical Offiiti the Tropical Diseases Hospital in St. Peter’s Hospital, Covent Garden, and in the. Fistula Hospital, London. In 1903 Dr.- Hunter left London and carried on a private practice in Melbourne until 1902, when he returned to Dunedin and for many years carried on practice as a specialist in genitourinary disease.

Hr Hunter was keenly interested in athletics, particularly in football, and, while attending high school, represented his province. Later ho represented Otago on many occasions, including three matches against Rtoddart’s team, lie also represented the South Island in ’IBBB. He was recognised as one of the most capable coaches ever seen in Otago' and he was responsible •for a marked improvement in the standard of play by the University club, whose conspicuous success in 190 d, DOG and 1807 was directly attributable to his able tutelage. hie is survived by a widow, one daughter, two brothers, (Professor Hunter, Wellington, and Mr Allen Hunter Sydney) and two sisters. His mother, who still survives,. resides in Roslvn.
