At the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr Paterson, S.M., Hori Man, Albert James Brown and Edwin Fowkos were charged with breaches of the Gaming Act. The police asked for a remand to January 1 Jth, which was granted. F. N. Abler, Auckland, charged with travelling on the Whaka Road at 60 miles.an hour, was fined £5 and costs. Inspector Fold stated in his evidence that his speed to overtake defendant was 68 miles an hour. Lionel Shottor Dawes was charged with attempted rape on December loth at Rotorua. The evidence was mostly unprintable. Accused was committed to the Supreme. Court Hamilton on February 24th. “SHOPLIFTING TOUR,” WOMAN BEFORE COURT. AUCKLAND, December 20. A series of shoplifing charges were admitted by Anna Alexander Mills, a god 43, married, in the Police Court. Chief Detective Hammond described the offences as a Christmas shoplifting tour. Accused visited five shops, and stole something from each cue. She was fined £2O for a similar offence two years ago.
Magistrate Hunt said that hut for the fact that accused was in very bad health he would send here to prison. She would be, fined £2O. SUICIDE’S BODY. FOUND IN THE SEA, CHRISTCHURCH, December 20. Three boys, fishing from rocks at Scarborough, near Sumner, to-day, found the dead hody of a man floating in the water. The body bore a wound on the throat, indicating that death iVas due to suicide. Deceased was a young man. The body was well dressed. The, clothing gave no clue to identity. POLICE CONSTABLE ARRESTED. CHARGE OF BREAKING AND ENTERING. WELLINGTON, December 19. Following Hie discovery of a man on the premises of C. Smith, Ltd., one night recently, a startling development is the arrest of a police constable and a man who until a, short time ago was a member of the force. They are Hugh Robertson Stevenson, 27 and Wilfred Leonard Hamm, 29. The former was charged ’ before Mr Page, S.M. with receiving from Joseph Maurice White, and Rarnm clothing to the value of £l2 lls fid, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. ' He was remanded on hail amounting to £2OO. A similar remand was granted in the case of Ramin, who was charged with breaking and entering Smith’s and stealing three suits of pyjamas, a liat two caps, a dressing gown; two singlets, a pair of trousers, a pyjama coat seven shirts, two airs df gloves, four collars, a scarf and nine ties, of a total value of £25. The chief detective said that till a week ago accused was a police constable. This was only one of a series of charges in which he would be involved.
FJSHER.M A N DR OWNED. AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. John Massey Gardiner, aged 50, married, with live young children, residing at Tepapapa was drowned in the upper reaches of Manapau Harbour oil Saturday afternoon. Gardiner was fishing from a dinghy with a net. He appeared to overbalance and become entangled 'n the net. He called for help. Three men on the shore swam out to his assistance, one getting very dose to Gardiner before lie disappeared. Diving was carried out, in an elfort to 10-ate the body, without success. ,J a mi's Hanna, aged 65, single, who had been missing from his home since December 18th. was found drowned, his hody being discovered floating in the Auckland Harbour on Saturday afternoon.
GELIGNITE EXPLODES. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 22. James William Pemberton (29), a waggoner, while unpacking gelignite, at Limehills, suffered extensive injuries to ms right hand as a result of a stick of gelignite exploding. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday when it was found necessary to amputate his right hand. AUCKLAND SHOP BURGLED. AUCKLAND, December 21. Burglars visited Hutchinson’s grocery shop, in Great South Road hr night, blew open the 'strongroom door, rifled the cash box, made a tour of the shop, and stole goods and cash totalling about C 35. The burglary was discovered this morning by a newspaper vendor. TAX I DRIVER’S LICENSE. CANCELLED. AUCKLAND, December 21. Herbert Kane, taxidriver, aged 2' was lined CIO, and his license was cancelled fur being intoxicated while in charge of a ear. MAN CHARGED. DUNEDIN, December 21. At the Police Court, William Alexander Robertson was charged with
breaking and entering a shop by night and stealing goods. He was remanded till Friday. The police state that accused was caught red-handed in the shop by the owner, who struck him a devere blow, .’rendering him unconscious. The Magistrate remarking that there was an epidemic of burglaries at present, refused bail. BODY IN THE SEA. CM R I STUM UR (Tl, December 22. The hody of the man found in the. sea off Sumner yesterday has been identified as that df Harry Brash, aged 33, a single man, who was employed by the railways as a crane driver. He was an Englishman, with no relative here. VICE REGAL TOUR. MASTERTON, December 22. THeir Excellencies General Sir Charles Fergusson and Lady Alice Fergusson were fa rewelled on Saturday at a gathering in the Town Hall, at which there was a representative attendance. Their Excellencies were tendered a civic luncheon, Sir Charles Fergusson later inspecting Rovers, Scouts and Cubs, and presenting prizes won in the Wairarapa Agricultural Club’s mangold growing eempetition. The visit was quite short, the Vice-Regal party leaving again after four o’clock. *
