GOULD’S DISCOVERY
I United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] (Received this day at 8 a.m.) VANCOUVER, December 21. Carmen Land which Amundsen saw to the east of his route to the Pole apparently does not exist. Byrd came to ibis conclusion on his first baselaying flight, when he flew to at an altitude which enabled him to see far over what should have been Carmen Land, and later on during the polar flight no land appeared in the direction except a chain of mountains running to the south east. Neither did the photographs show Carmel Land. This confusion lias now been verified by Dr. Gould, leader of the geoglogieal party who has travelled 110 miles east oif Axellieiling glacier and penetrated into Mary Byrd Land well beyond the 150 meridian, “1 wish to emphasise most emphatically that this is in no sense a reflection upon Amundsen’s observation as his view from the ground must necessarily have been very limited and somewhat uncertain on account of bad visibility, mirages and enormous pressure ridges that are deceptive,” Gould’s message to Byrd last night said.
