A DAMAGES CLAIM. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, Dec. 20. On behalf of J. Garden (Secretary of the Trades and Labour Council) a writ is being issued out of the Supreme Court against Smith’s Newspapers Limited claiming five thousand sterling damages in respect to an article dealing with Garden’s attitude during the Rothbury trouble. KAURI TIMBER COY. MELBOURNE, December 19. At the annual meeting of the Kauri Timber Company, flic report stated the nett profits for the year amounted to £20,734, making, with the amount brought forward from last year (£6531 and the transfer front the dividend equalisation fund (£500) a total of £22,888, from which the directors recommend a dividend of throe per cent, absorbing 0)2:$, 500, carrying forward £3BB. The report was adopted. Sir John Bishop was re-elected to the directorate.

It is understood Mr Beasley threatens to resign from the Federal Cabinet unless prosecutions a [re jh lSitituted against the State Minister of Minos, Mr Weaver, John Brown and coal owners under the Crimes Act. The Prime Minister (Mr Senllin) is making a special visit to Sydney to interview Mr Beasley on the matter. Tt is understood at to-day’s Conference of Federal members, proposals will be submitted for decisive action against colliery proprietors.
