During the past three days there has been a considerable exodus of holidaymakers for various parts ol the Dominion and even Australia. The iuilux o visitors has also set in, and numbers are arriving daily by tram and motor car.

At Christchurch on Thursday evening Phil O’Shea, defeated Hubert Opperman, world’s champion cyclist, in the first of two five mile events held at English Park. It was a surprise which caused a mild sensation. O’Shea rode brilliantly, beating the Australian by slightly more than a length. Opperman, in the second heat, which was also an exciting race, won by half a wheel, riding with all the brilliance shown by O’Shea in the first event.

In connection with the death of the Eight Rev. Bishop Cleary, of Auckland the following resolution was adopted at' a meeting held on December 17: — “That the Standing Committee of the New Zealand Alliance deplores the loss to our national life sustained through the death of the Eight Eev. Bishop Cleary, and records its admiration and gratitude for his great endeavour ill the cause of temperance.”

Matters are now well in hand for the Hokitika race meeting on Thursday next. The "Westland Club this year has the promise of an ex •client meeting. The course and appointments are in first-class order, and the improvements to the track should give added pleasure to both the public and the owners. The .Municipal Band will be in attendance and assist with a musical programme. The Club has a hardworking staff of officials, and may lie expected to conduct the sport to the satisfaction of the public. There is an excellent train servi.e, and motor services will also assist to augment the attendance. The meeting has been well advertised in the Buller district, and an influx of visitors is expected from that end now that the Coast road is open. The journey from "Westport to Hokitika is possible in four or five hours, and will be made by many with whom galloping fixtures are popular.

A Westport press wire states the body of George Baker, who was drowned at Tiroroa on'Saturday, 14th. inst. when attempting to swim, the Buller River, was found on the beach at Fairdown by Mr Carr, a gold prospector, at 4 p.m. yesterday. It was removed to the morgue. An inquest for the purposes of identification will be held today.

The death occurred yesterday at her late residence, Kaimata, of Mrs Eliza Stratford, wife of Mr Edmund Stratford (the well-known sawmiller), and one of the most esteemed residents of the Grey district. The deceased, who was 68 years of age, was a daughter of the late Mr Pelling, a pioneer resident. She leaves three sons, Edward (Greymoutb), Frederick (Paroa), and Albert (Dobson).
