W'ELTE V REDEN, Dec. 18. Elephants demolished a native settlement in South Sumatra. A police detachment was ordered to chase the herd, and four men were cut off by the elephants hut returned after several days wandering through the forests.
JAPANESE TRADE. KOBE, Dee. 19. Complaints of lack of prosperity in the woollen trade culminated yesterday by the announcement that Godo mills at Osaka intend to discharge half of their seven thousand workers, causing consternation in the neighbourhood. In the New Zealand appeal to the Privy Council in the case of Wanganui Timber Coy. v. Maunder, judgment was reserved. KING TO SPEAK AT THE NAVAL CONFERENCE! ■ LONDON, Dee. 19. In the Commons, Mr MacDonald announced that the King would deliver the opening address at the Naval Conference. NO TARIFF TRUCE. GIpNEVA, Dec. 19. The Australian and South African Governments have notified the League of Nations of their refusal to participate in the Tariff Truce, Conference. JAPANESE ENVOY. (Received this day at 1.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 19. A former Premier of Japan, Reiji 10 Wakatsuki, is the chief Japanese delegate to the London naval limitations conference. He will enter the Conference prepared to support a proposal that there be a complete holiday in building of capital ships, until 1986.
