THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

THE COAL CRISIS. The position in New South Wales is that the action of the Government has been directly challenged by the miners, and the Government must go ahead with its programme in spite of all threats. It must protect the free miners, and if force is used against it, it must reply with force. The alternative would be a surrender to the unionists, a confession that the authority of the Government had ceased to run in the State, and the virtual abandonment of industry and commerce to the control of the Communists. —Christchurch Times.

Letters of credit on various banks are , well known as boons to travellers but it is not generally known that this system is in force at the;.Post Office Savings Bank. There are many people who about this time visit the Savings Bank and draw therefrom twenty pounds or thereabouts to cover; a trip over Christinas. It would save them the trouble and anxiety of carrying a sum of money with them if they simply got a letter of credit from the'Savings Bank. That would enable them to draw on any post office they met with on their travels. It is possible to get a letter of credit to any any amount that is deposited in the Savings Bank, with a £SO limit.
