The death occurred in the Duller Hospital on Monday of Mrs Freeman, wile o’f Mr Freeman of Tiroroa. The late Mrs Freeman was a native of Roxburgh, and was only 24 years of age. She leaves a husband and two wee babies.

At Hie State School yesterday morning, the staff assembled at 10 o’clock, and Mr E. Partridge, on behalf of the school staff made a presentation of a smoker’s outfit to Mr D. C. Williamson, assistant master, who is severing his connection with the school, to take up advanced duties at the Geraldine school. Mr Williamson has been on the local staff for five years, and in addition to the Rector, good wishes were expressed by Mr J. Niven, both recognising the good qualities of their departing comrade. Mr Williams acknowledged the kind remarks and. presentation, and stated his stay here had been a happy one and there was much to remind him of the regret he felt in leaving the school. Good wishes were then exchanged as between the staff, and the little ceremony concluded.

The death occurred at Wellington on Friday of Captain William Henry lieu nail, at the age of eighty years. For many years Captain Hennah was Chief Messenger and Housekeeper of Parliament Buildings. He was born at Williamstown, Victoria, and in the early ’seventies he visited New Zealand, where lie had.some experience on the West Coast goldfields. Returning to Australia he settled in Ballarat, where he became captain and superintendent of the city fire brigade. During his residence in Ballarat he took an active interest in the Volunteer movement, and in 1887 he was raised to the rank of captain and adjutant of the Third Battalion of the Victorian Regiment, Captain Hennah settled in Wellington in the latter part of 1893, and took up the position at Government Buildings. He was a prominent Mason, and was a Past Master of the Ballarat Lodge. Mrs Hennah was a sister of Mrs R. J. Seddon.

An accident occurred in the bush at the Soutli Beach on Wednesday, when a sawmill employee, W. Gaulter, of Cobden, was struck on the head by a falling limb of a tree. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital, and his condition yesterday was reported as satisfactory.

Fire completely destroyed the residence of Mr ]>. O’Neill, Dunedin Street R.unanga, at an early hour yesterday morning. There was no time to save the contents of the house, and Mr O’Neill had to make his escape through a window, clad only in his pants and coat. The only reason Mr O’Neill can advance for the outbreak is that' a fire kept going to dry his working clothes may have ignited the clothes. .The insurances are £2OO on the house, and £2OO on the contents in the United office.

An alarm of fire at 11. 20 o’clock last night quickly had the Brigade on the scene in Leonard Street, Greymouth, where a Republic motor bus, belonging to Messrs Gould Bros, and standing beside Schaef’s building, was encircled by flames. It is undertood that the driver, Mr Sam Boyd, was engaged in filling the tank prior to going to Dobson for the men coming off Ifrom the mid-night shift, when the benzine tin came in contact with the battery, which was placed alongside the tank, and caused a spark, so igniting the fluid. The whole of the machine was a mass of flame instantly and the driver received painful burns on his hands and face, necessitating his attendance on the doctor. Although the Brigade arrived smartly on the scene, and the outbreak was quickly sup’/jssed, the conveyance suffered considerable damage,/the- framework and upholstery being eaten into by the flames, and one of the tyres exploded owing to the heat:
