An explosion occurred on Sunday in the stove of Mr J. Chappelow, Derby St. Westport. The door of the fireplace was .shot out into the middle of the room, striking Mr Currie on the thigh in its flight, hut not so severely as to cause him injury, The kettle on tne stove was perforated with holes. Airs Chappelow, who was not quite in a direct line with the fire, had a cup blown out of her hand. Fortunately no serious damage was done, no one being directly in front of the fire when the explosion took place. It is supposed that the explosion was due to some explosive having been left in the coal when it was mined.

The Christchurch Times says; At eight minutes past four oil 4 iiesdav morning an earthquake was recorded at the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. Tt was slight, hut was more severe than the one experienced on Monday morning. It was almost certainty from the north of Christchurch, and the measurement of the record makes the distance of the origin slightly over 120 miles distant, which is about the same distance as the .Duller ’quake was from here. The record shows that seismic activity was not confined to New Zealand, as movements from two minor, and more distant shocks, snow up earlier on the seismograph.

As the Workers’ Compensation Act stands at present, there is no clause covering occupational diseases arising from employment with tar, bitumen, and other mineral oils, used mainly in road-making. To ask that this class of work be included in the compensation clauses, the Trades and Labour Council has written to the Minister of' Labour (the Hon. AY. A. A’eitch). The letter also, points out that there is no compensation payable to a worker who partially loses his sight, and asks that this be also amended. Road workers are firm in their belief that tneir occupation gives rise to cancer, and kindred diseases.
