THEFT CHARGE
AGAINST GOVERNMENT SERVANT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 13. Arrested yesterday, Richard James Unnigan, aged 20, clerk, a Government servant residing at Ponsonby, appeared at the Police Court to-day, and was charged that on April 13th. 1920, and on divers dates to November 9th, 1920, he stole sums totalling £3 10s, the property of tlie New Zealand government. Chief Detective Hammond obtained a remand until Decemer 19th. Counsel asked for bail and also requested that accused’s name should he suppressed until the case came up for hearing. Magistrate Hunt granted bail in £IOO, with two securities of £IOO each. Referring to the question of suppression, he said: “1 am not going to make a regular practice of suppressing names. Others wuo are employed in the Government service will only be suspected if I sunpress Lanigan’s name.” Counsel said: “Nothing has been proved yet! The case had not been heard!” “Never mind,” said the Magistrate, “if lie’s acquitted, it will be all right for him. won’t make any order.”
