WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12. A meeting of the Executive was held at 7.30 o’clock. Present: Messrs T. W. Duff (voted'*-to the chair), W. Wilson, L*. J. Evans, and H. G. Coles. Apology for absence was made for Dr Teichelmann. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. INWARD -CURREBIPONDIENCE. Front Eric James, Dunedin, reporting as the Paringa hut was not available for travellers, additional accommodation along the route was essential if the tourist traffic was to be encouraged.—Received. It was resolved to apply to the Tourist Department for the erection of two huts on the 50 1 mile, stage between Paringa and tho Haast rivers. From same with respect to a camping area at Makorora.—Received. It was decided that while being sympathetic in the’fifattefr'; the"' locality‘ was outside the Westland provincialarea, and action could not be taken. From same reporting sixteen lantern lectures of Wiestlnnd tourist attractions had been given in both Islands, and in addition various meetings had been addressed. It was hoped next year to extend the lecturing tour ,i ”+o more North Island centres and also to Australia, if funds permitted.—Received and appreciation expressed at the action taken. From Canterbury Progress League reporting 'business at last meeting, and stating the date for the annual conference to be held at Nelson had been referred to the Standing Committee for attention.—Received. GENERAL.

The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £l6 19s od, and there were liabilities amounting to £ls. Received.

The recent issue of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier booklet by the Publicity Branch of the Railways towards which funds were raised locally, was appreciated, and it was resolved to apply for a number of copies for distribution.

Mr Evans reported favourably in respect to a discussion with the Organiser at -Christchurch regarding Westland representation at the next Canterbury Winter Show which would b;>: held most probably in the new Exhibition Hall. Local concessions were promised, and it was resolved to advise the country committees and ask that active preparations be made regarding providing exhibits.

It was resolved to take up at the next meeting of the League, the matter of initiating a local request for the extension of the railway into South Westland. The meeting was fixed for the 16th January.

The meeting concluded at 8.15 p.m.
