POSED AS DETECTIVES.
TIPSY MEN VISIT CHINESE SHOP. AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. Charles Henry Whitehead, aged 29 a labourer, was fined £lO, or in tlie alternative, one month’s imprisonment, by Mr Hunt. S.M.. for posing as a detective. The police stated that two men entered a Chinese shop last night. ’Hie accused stated that they wen- sent bv the Chief Detective to see if there was any gambling <>r opium smoking. One of tho Chinese became suspicious, and telephoned to the police headquarters. When tho police arrived, the two men had disappeared, but Whitehead was arrested later. 'The accused said that he was the worse for liquor, and the affair was only a joke. The Magistrate said that the offence was a very serious one. and drunkenness^^
