THE ADJUSTMENT. . The Australian coal settlement has been purchased at a somewhat heavy price to all sections of the community. The importance of t the resumption of work in the coalfields' was so great, howevqr, that the public will not grudge the sacrifices demanded of it to achieve that end, and \ particular it will be intensely by the knowledge that the paralysing general, strike,, which threatened to produce serious l embittersments during the Christmas season- has been averted The coal industry, of New South' Wales is one of vast importance not only to the State but to the whole of tue Commonwealth, and the re-opening of the mines should enable the general public, together with the miners and owners to enter upon the new year under conditions more ..favourable than, they had reason to anticipate only a week ago. —Otago.
