A NEW ’PLANE

DANNEVIRKE, Nov. 29
The first Hawke’s Bay privately owned ’plane, a Gipsy. Moth, purchased by Mr Ilamish Armstrong, of Akitio, while recently in England, was flown to Dannevirke from Wellington yesterday by the owner, accompanied by Horace Riddell. A stop was made at Martin borough. The machine behaved splendidly. It leit Dannevirke this morning for the owner’s home on tho coast.
A LAD KILLED
"WELLINGTON, Nov. 29
Charles Bell, 18, of Hutt Road, Pc tone, was run down on tho main road, hoar Lower Hutt, by a motor car, while cycling along at 8.30 o’clock last night. ll,e died later in the hospital. Ail employee- of the Hutt Valley Power Board heard a crash and took tho number of a car going north, which he presumed to have been the cause of the accident.
Deceased had in front of him Miss Willis, daughter of Mrs Willis, of \\ aterloo Road, who was severely shaxen and cut. Tho bicycle was damaged beyond repair.
THEFT CHARGES
PALMERSTON N., Nov. 29
At the Police Court, Daniel Gilchirst, 23, Gordon Max King, 19, and Algar Roy Douglas Mason, 19, were charged with breaking and entering a stoie at Shannon and stealing articles valued at £9O, the property of the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co.
Gilchrist and Mason were also charged with converting to their own use a motor car, the property ot Sydney Charles Davison.
Gilchrist and Mason were convicted on a charge on the conversion charge. All three pleaded guilty to the other charges and were committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
MISHAP TO GOODS TRAIN
FIREMAN SEVERELY BURNED
OAMARU, Nov. 27,
The night express from Invercargill was two hours late in reaching Oamaru this morning due to anaccident to the engine of the special goods train at Waianakarua. The goods tram was running from Dunedin- to Oamaru ahead of the passenger train, but on reaching Waianakarua, through some cause not disclosed, a “blow back” is said to have happened in the cab. Fireman Williamson, of Dunedin, was severely burned about the face and hands and suffered from shock. He was attended to by Dr Trotter, of Hampden, and c'omveyixl to the Oamaru Hospital, the injured fireman was replaced by u man front Oamaru, who was despatched to the scene by car. In the meantime the passenger train was held' at Hampden until the line was cleared. The goods train was backed into the siding and the night express got through two hours behind schedule. The goods train was later coupled to a following express goods train and together with the disabled engine arrived at Oamaru shortly after 5 a.m.
BIGGS RETURNS TO SYDNEY
AUCKLAND, November 29
H. A. Biggs was a passenger by the Ulimaroa to-day on the return voyage to Sydney. Two Auckland detectives were at the gangway to se that Biggs did not miss his passage. n I have nothing to say,” replied Biggs, to a pressman, just before sailing. He was looking as unconcerned as any passenger. WOMAN’S DEATH. TAIITAPE, Nov. 29. The body of a woman, Airs E. Hughes, aged 62, was found last evening by her husband and sn on their return home after four days’ work in the country. The evidence was that she had died three days ago from a heart attack when getting out of bed. There was no inquest as a medical certificate was available. ESTATE BEQUESTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 29. Bequests under the will of the late Dr Levinge, formerly Superintendent of Sunnvside Mental Hospital include: Barnardo’s Homes £s'o, St.‘Saviour’s Homes £230, Salvation Army £250. S.P.C.A'. £IOO. The residue of the estate goes to relatives.
