DEAN INGE AND THE DOMINIONS
LONDON, October 10.
Dean 'lnge, of gloomy repute, has again been tackling the thorny subject of life in the Dominions. He declares “ We have to Iface the fact that a whole class of young Englishman, who are decidedly above the average both physically and intellectually, are being ruthlessly squeezed out of existence. They may emigrate ? Yes, many of them do, and some of them make good. But farming is very unlucrative all over the world; in most of the Dominions,a man should have considerable capital, both to begin and to tide over bad years. And where is the capital to come from? Mis father is ground down to the bone with taxation, and can hardly make both ends meet. Nor is the young Englishman always welcomed or fairly treated in the Dominions. When • f raised this question last year, I received scores of bitter letters from emigrants to ’Australia, and 1 have just rend a piteous complaint Urom New 1 Zealand. 1 am afraid the outlook for my own class is about as black" as it can be, and that the 1 so-called race suicide will continue.. The old professional families will die of bungalitis. These ugly little buildings, erected for deliberately childless couples, will cover the face of the country. Ultimately, I suppose, the expensive universities will disappear, and we shall have our children educated hy the State,”
