FINDING EMPLOYMENT
MR THOMAS’S SCHEME.
(British Official: Wireless).
RUGBY, Nov. 21.
Crown law officers are preparing a Bill designed to enable local authorities to dispense with certain legal formalities in undertaking their employment plans. When the Bill becomes law, these authorities will be relieved of the necessity of promoting special Acts of Parliament before certain works may be undertaken.
Lord Privy Seal, Mr J. H. Thomas, who, in a statement to the Press, made this announcement, added that progress with unemployment schemes was being made in many directions, and expenditure to the amount of ■between. £40,000,000 and £50,000,000 had been sanctioned. He again expresed the conviction that expansion of the export trade lay at the root of the matter, and in this connection ho was discussing various questions with the, motor trade. Mr Thomas said that he was finding out hv what means, other than a horse-power tax, the same revenue could be secured with more advantage from the motor industry. Tim newspapers interpret this as an indication of the Government’s intention to abolish the horse-power tax which encourages the production of small-engined cars that are unsuitable for export, and reaching it with increased petrol taxation.
