GOVERNOR-GENERAL
GISBORNE FAREWELL. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, November 21. The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson arrived at Gisborne at one o’clock to-day from Wairoa, and will remain here until to-morrow afternoon, when they will leave for Motu and Opotiki. The day was sultry and slightly cloudy, and the proceedings throughout most enthusiastic. A lengthy procession of territorials, veterans, cadets, boy scouts, girl guides, and two bands and school children marched to the reserve, where a public meeting was held to bid farewell. There was a very large attendance. Addresses were delivered by the Mayor (Mr D. W. Coleman) and Mr W. D. Lysnar, M.P., and His Excellency replied. During the proceedings, Sir Charles was presented with a valuable Maori mat on behalf of Lady Carroll. Later in the afternoon Her Excellency delivered a delightful address to women and girls o/f the district, there being an attendance of eleven hundred at the Opera House. Lady Alice urged parents to give children a bias to live on the land, and also dealt at length with, amongst other matters, the Plunket Society, Girl Guides, and League of Mothers. At 7 p.m. His Excellency, as Grand Master of the N.Z. Freemasons, attended a crowded function of brethren of the Order, all constitutions being represented. At 8 p.m. a largely attended and enthusiastic civic reception and farewell was given at the Garrison Hall, where speeches were delivered by the Mayor and chairmen of local bodies. GISBORNE, November 22. The Governor-General visited local institutions this morning and was entertained by the Rotary Club at lunch. He left for Motu en route to Rotorua this afternoon.
