THE SAFE-BLOWERS
AT CHRISTCHURCH
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 21
The fifth of a series of safe-blow-ing outrages is recorded. Thieves entered the White Star Brewery yesterday morning early and blew open the safe with explosives and took two or 1 three pounds in cash. From the safe and cashbox the thieves obtained about £3 and although there are signs of a comprehensive search of the premises nothing else was taken. Amongst the exhibits held by the police are a screwdriver and a hammer belonging to the brewery, which were used for the robbery, a screwdriver of their own for which they had no further use, a khaki handkerchief, and a detonator. The time of the theft was probably 2 a.m. A man living nearby was awakened by a crash at about this time.
In all these robberies, the keyhole of a safe had been plugged up with some explosive—(probably geligniteand the charge had been detonated. In most of them, the quantity of explosive used has been neither too much to shatter or jam the safe door, nor too little to be ineffective in putting the locking mechanism out of action.
The last four crimes fall at twoday intervals ,as shown in the following table—Monday, Nov. 11th, Paparua County Council; Thursday, Nov. 14th. Jarral Timber Coy.; Saturday, Nov. 16th. Mr Dollan’s premises; Wednesday, Nov. 20th. White Star Brewery.
