Concerning the pending Cabinet vacancy, an Auckland paper says that it is in a position to state that it is unlikely that. any fresh appointment will be made until shortly before the 1930 session of Parliament. Meantime the lion T. K. Sidey. Leader of the Legislative Council, and Attorney-General, will take temporary charge of the Defence Department.

This opinion expressed has no official foundation, 'according to inquiries made in Wellington to-day. There is good reason to believe that the Prime. Minister lias not yet considered the matter of appointing a successor to Mr AVilforcl.

POSTMASTER RETIRES. . ‘ WELLINGTON, November 20. ‘ Mr R. H. Boyd. Chief Postmaster at Wellington, will retire Irom the. service on Friday, alter, being . approximately forty years with the Department. The staff of the . Chief Post Office marked the occasion of his retirement by presenting him with a gold watch.

.Ur J. M. McLean, Postmaster at Wanganui, has been appointed Chief Postmaster at Wellington. In his earlier years, Mr McLean was on the telegraphic staff of the Department, and was lor years on the Government staff at Cable Bay
