Wilkins radios from Deception Island as follows: Gales, rain and sleet have delayed operations by keeping, us indoors. Alternate freezing and thawing, which we are experiencing creates the worst possible conditions on the harbour, from winch we hope to take olf.
’PLANE STRIKES ROCK
PASSENGERS’ NARROW ESCAPE

Twelve passengers had a narrow escape from serious injury when the famous ’plane Canberra, piloted by Capt. Holden, struck'a large rock and overturned at Long Plain, near Inverell. The ’plane struck a boulder, which was hidden in the long grass with great force. Several occupants were cut and others escaped with shock. The ’plane was badly damaged.
