Arrested at Greymouth and charged with theft of £lB Bs, funds of a footbail club for which he was secretary, a young man of 26 was at Christchurch admitted to six years’ probation by Magistrate Levvey on Monday. It was stated that at Christchurch he was working as a costing clerk at a salary of £2 per week. He received an offer of a position oti the Coast at £4 10s per week. His then Arm agreed to the change, provided the accused squared his account, which stood, at about £l2. In his desire to get over to the better job, he misappropriated the club’s funds, but regarded it as borrowing, having the intention of paying back the full amount as soon as he was able. He has since refunded £lB, and only the odd shillings are owing. He admitted the whole affair, and always intended to make restitution.
The Grey County Engineer, Mr,.J. Higgins, yesterday visited Punakaiki, to ascertain what damage had been done Jiy Tuesday’s lieavy rain. Tlie bridge over Canoe Creek was found to be damaged, while there is a big slip near Headman’s Creek, a boulder weighing several tons having shifted bodily about four feet away from its original testing place. There were minor slips along the road, but they will not prove to be of any disadvantage to traffic, as the workmen who are engaged on them are expected to speedily clear them. Canoe Creek is still in high flood, but a footbridge over can still be used. When the waters recede, it is probable that a iford, which was q,sed befqre the bridge was built, will be used for traffic. The bridge was built by the settlers of the district some six years ago.
