THE NEW TURKEY
SUNDAY OBSERVANCE. [United Press Association.—By Electric ' Telegraph.—Copyright.] LONDON, Nov. 17. The Times Constantinople correspondent states that the President of Turkey, Mustapha Kernel Pasha, has continued his policy of the AYesternising of Turkey by a sudden breach of “The Day of Rest” tradition. Comment has been caused 'Ey ;his opening ol tithe Turkish' National Assembly on Friday, Nov. Ist:. It is now officially announced that this policy will be enforced at an early date, and • that the Oovernment will make Sunday the “Day of Rest,” instead of Friday. This is primarily for financial and commercial reasons. The European Stock Exchanges and Banks at Constantinople are open on Fridays, and are shut on Sundays. Turkey must fall into line, or must lose a day’s business. The Government considers the losses thereby caused are so serious that during the country’s economic reconstruction the tradition must be sacrificed.
