The New’ South Wales State Cabinet has granted £50,000 to provide work over the Christmastide for the men who, otherwise, would he unemployed.

MELBOURNE, November 19,
The Prime Minister announced that £15,000 is being advanced by the Commonwealth and State Governments towards the fund to help producers improve breeding stock by importations .of pigs, cattle, ancl‘sheep front Great Britain. ' '
Representatives of the Overseas transport Association requested the Prime .Minister-to alter the provisions of the Monopolies Prevention Act to enable joint agreements to be made between shipowners and shippers for the more economical working of shipping lines, and for the better regulation of freight. .)k
Mr J. H. Scullin promised careful consideration of the request and added that it opened up a most interesting and important question. •
AN APPOINTMENT.
MELBOURNE, November 18
It is officially announced Mr H. J. Brennan has been elected General Secretary of the Seamen’s Union of Australia, COMMERCIAL. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) ' SYDNEY, Nov. 18. The wholesale price of butter was reduced to-day by one half-penny per pound, and cheese by a penny.
Potato supplies are limited at £2B per ton. The retail price is 5d per lb.
