The death took place yesterday morning in the Gfey River Hospital of Mr John Knox, of C'obden, who had been in the institution during the past two- months with pneumonia. Deceased was born in Greymouth 45 years ago.

He joined the railways service and had been on the staff of the local section for about 25 years. He ; is survived bv a widow, an unmarried daughter and three -sons-, all of Greymouth.

The Inangahua “Times” says:—Mr Percy CoUdn, driving for Newman Bros., was going down the Buller roacl above the Nine Mile on Friday evening, when a large opossum sprang off the bank. It struck the -front wheel with its head and was spun-right under the car, without further hitting it, to the other side of the rbad. The car was stopped and the opossum, one of the largest seen in the district, was recovered dead.

In this issue the Railway Department advertises particulars regarding the evening trains from Greymouth to ntira, Blackball, Hokitika and Ilewanui being delayed on Saturday, 23rd. November; also the- issue of Holiday Excursion fares to Greymouth on 23rd. November on account of the Bagpipe Band Contest at Greymouth that day.

All the principal butter factories in the district are showing a general increase in output this season. In one instance a factory with fewer suppliers in the country is now recording an output showing a marked increase on last year’s production. Improved herds and better feed ‘resulting from top-dressing are said to be the contributing causes.

The death of a White Leghorn in r Wanganui fowlyard was caused in.an unusual manner. The occupant of the house went out to the kitchen garden to smoke a cigarette, and threw the butt into the fowfyard. It was promptly snapped up by the unfortunate fowl, which subsequently succumbed, either through its gullet being burnt by the linextinguished butt or through 'the tobacco poisoning the crop.

A meeting of. the West Coast-Nel-son Branch of the New Zealand Institute of'County Clerks will be held at Murchison on Saturday nbxt. Allegations of objectionably rough 'riding'in express trains ou tlie Midland line, which were made by passengers from Greymouth some week's ago, have again been raised by passengers on the express from the Coast to Christchurch on Saturday. It is stated that certain carriages swayed and jolted very- bad lv at several points between Springfield and Rolleston, passengers being hardly able to keep upright in their seats for several minutes at a time. One passenger stated that the worst stretch of riding was just before the train reached Rolleston, and that he was on the point of applying the emergency brake when the train slowed down, as tlie carriage which he was in seemed to be swinging dangerously from end to end, besides swaying and jolting. Although the Express was late leaving Arthur’s Pass and time was made, up, none of the passengers; seem to have been under the impression that tlie train was travelling at too high a speed, '
